Before becoming a college student I never paid much attention to the cost of homes or renting, now that I rent a apartment at college I am more aware of how much it costs to rent. The cost of renting an apartment is very high and after reading the “How Homeownership Became the Engine of American Inequality” article and reading the peoples stories within it made me realize how it is a problem. House inequality and residential segregation affect schooling because the people who live in richer neighborhoods go to better schools. Within the one article “We Shall Not be Moved” Barbara Byrd-Bennett the former superintendent says there is an utilization crisis. She says children are being cheated out of education by not having the right resources. This is an example of the house inequality and residential segregation because based on where they live it affects their schooling. A quote from Bennett that stuck with me is “The utilization crisis threatens our ability to provide every child in every school with access to a well-rounded, high-quality education that they deserve.” It is sad that we know this is going on but not much is done about it and the children are the ones affected and it affects their future. From the article “Defund the Private Schools” they say that “we need states to remove the structures that inhibit public school districts that serve Black and Brown children.” That will help with educational inequality because its not fair that these schools don’t treat students all the same and that children are being affected by this. Also, within that article i read that they came up with a slogan “work hard and be nice” I think thats a great thing to say to students because in a more positive environment they have better chance of success.
